The Loyola School, a Jesuit Catholic school serving predominantly African American children in Baltimore City, celebrated a historic milestone on June 12, 2026: the graduation of its first fourth-grade class.

The 12 graduates began their journeys at The Loyola School during different stages of the school’s growth. Together, they became the first students to complete the school’s full educational program, which now serves children from age two through fourth grade. The ceremony celebrated not only their academic accomplishments, but also their personal and spiritual growth.

Surrounded by their families, teachers, and members of the school community, the graduates reflected on the friendships they formed, the challenges they overcame, and the values they will carry with them. They are now continuing their education at local independent middle schools that share The Loyola School’s commitment to helping Baltimore City students thrive.

The graduation demonstrated what is possible when children are surrounded by educators who know them, care for them, and encourage them to recognize their God-given gifts.

Soon after graduation, students from PreK-2 to 3rd grade began a seven-week summer program combining continued academic instruction with STEAM activities, cultural enrichment, outdoor exploration, and opportunities to try new things. Each morning included classroom learning in subjects such as reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. Field trips and special activities allowed students to apply their learning, develop confidence, and experience places beyond their immediate neighborhoods.

PreK-4, Kindergarten, and first-grade students visited the Baltimore Museum of Art, where they explored the galleries and learned how artists use color, shape, materials, and movement. PreK-4 students began their visit with guided stretching in the museum’s Sculpture Garden, connecting physical movement with artistic expression.

Students in Kindergarten through third grade visited an outdoor environmental education center, where every student had an opportunity to kayak and paddleboard. For some children, this was their first experience participating in these activities. Students encouraged one another, practiced perseverance, and discovered new confidence on the water.

Kindergarten students also explored African history, traditions, art, and culture through an interactive museum visit. Throughout the summer, younger students participated in early literacy experiences, nature exploration, music, gymnastics, water play, and hands-on STEAM activities.

Elementary students concluded the STEAM program by sharing their creativity through an Inventors Fair and art show. Students presented handmade bridges, marble runs, and solutions to a zipline challenge, proudly explaining how their ideas developed through experimentation and problem-solving.

The summer ended with a PreK-4 graduation celebrating students preparing to enter Kindergarten. From preschool students taking their first educational field trips to fourth graders beginning the next stage of their academic journeys, the summer reflected The Loyola School’s commitment to educating the whole child through academic learning, personal care, and spiritual growth.
